Insecticides taking toll on honeybees

When I first wrote about the mysterious epidemic of honeybee mortality in early 2007, the phenomenon had just been termed colony collapse disorder, or CCD. Scientists were at a loss to explain why bees were wandering away from hives and not returning. Commercial beekeepers have seen average population losses of about 30 percent each year since 2006, and mounting evidence indicates a class of insecticides known as neonicotinoids might be at least partially responsible for the phenomenon.

Researchers at a California university have found a parasitic fly which causes honeybees to become disoriented and abandon their hives before dying, behavior which made one of the researchers compare them to zombies.

700 Beehives Struck Down by Flood-Swollen Bulgarian River

GM honey must get EU thumbs up

Once Underground, Local Beekeepers Hold a Honey Festival

In the 18 months since city health officials reversed a ban, New York City beekeeping has gone from an illegal activity to one so robust and celebrated that it’s getting its own festival. The First Annual New York City Honey Festival will be held this Saturday at the Rockaway Boardwalk in Queens.

Swarm of 60,000 angry bees attack wheelchair-bound man and three others who try to save him

Thousands of angry bees attacked a man in a wheelchair, sending him and three others who came to his aid to hospital. The attack in the southern California city of Santa Ana also shut down a street and forced the evacuation of several businesses while beekeepers removed the hive, which was estimated to contain 60,000 bees.
